Eddie Jordan pops in
Formula One Team Boss Eddie Jordan popped in to McCarthys for lunch on the way to the races in Thurles on Thursday Nov 8th where he had a few runners in his own colours and in the Formula One Syndicate colours. His luck was definitely in, as his horse, Double Bogey Blues, won the second race, ridden by David Casey and trained here in Fethard by Mouse Morris.
Mouse went on to have a second winner, Brownie Returns, ridden by Ken Whelan who was deputising for David Casey who was injured in the previous race....well done Ken.
The Formula One Syndicate then returned to McCarthys to celebrate their win...and Mouse's two winners...and their own bit of luck, as they all backed the winner of the bumper as well. Not a bad day's racing at all!
The entrants in the Ride and Drive were blessed with a beautiful day for their outing. Many people who met them on the drive have since called in to the bar to say how impressed they were with the various traps and hope to see them again in the future.

County Final
Best of luck to the Fethard Team who take part in the County Football final on Sunday in Semple Stadium in Thurles. It's been 8 years since the cup has been in Fethard hands....lets hope it returns this weekend.
2 Cubs Up

If you look hard at this pic you can see two vintage aircraft taking advantage of a beautiful day to fly in formation over South Tipperary. Both are Piper Cubs, originally built in the 1940's in the USA,but now do most of their flying in Tipperary (after being re built).
Breeders Cup
A great night was had in the bar on Breeders Cup night,as we had plenty of local talent to shout for. Most were in to see Galileo, hoping that he'd emulate his great triumphs in Ireland and England in this years flat season.Unfortunately,he didn't shine on the night, but his stablemate,Johannesburg had the whole pub roaring as he romped home to an astounding victory.Well done to the Ballydoyle team.
Rediscovered
A selection of old building plans were re discovered recently when we cleaned out some old presses. We found them originally a few years ago when we converted the attic into a store. Among them were two of particular interest. One was the drawings for the chimney stack at the rear of the building...dated 1847..which is in very good condition and which we are getting framed to hang in the bar.The other is the plan for the old toilet, which anybody who frequented the bar pre 1985 will remember. By todays standards it was a hovel. The urinal was a drain with a tap at one end which was turned on full each night to clean it.The area containing the toilet bowl was interesting. There was no door on the outcrop of a wall which divided it from the urinal, until 1983 (things were getting a bit strict by then). It's crowning glory was, however, the actual seat, which was....a car tyre!!! One tourist was so impressed that he ran out to his car for his camera to photograph it to show to his friends back home in Greece.
McCarthy's Hotel Prints by Peter Curling
The last of the McCarthy's Hotel prints, which were taken from an original painting by Peter Curling, were sold today, Oct 17th.The painting of the interior of the bar was commissioned in 1991 by the Friends of Fethard, which was auctioned at a charity ball in aid of the restoration of the medieval town wall of Fethard. It was bought on the night by JP McManus, who later gave it as a present to John Magnier. A limited edition of 300 prints were produced.

Correction
